Picking out the right outfit to wear for an engagement session is sometimes extremely exciting, but also very nerve racking. There are so many different options you can choose from. But typically, the hardest part of choosing, is knowing exactly where to start. Here are some of my favorite go to’s on what to wear for your engagement session.
- Choose your color scheme first.
The reason I say choose your color scheme first, is because as a photographer, you want to make sure you and your partner compliment each other. While some look amazing in let’s say bright red for instance, that is not the right color for everyone. It is relatively easy to find a dress in the style that you like. However, finding a dress to wear for your engagement session in the color is extremely difficult sometimes.
2. What is a photographer’s favorite color palette?
As a professional photographer, my favorite color schemes for engagement sessions are neutrals. The wonderful thing about choosing a neutral color scheme for your engagement session is they look amazing anywhere. Weather it is in the desert, up north surrounded by the trees, or even just an adorable downtown session, having a simple color scheme is what photographs the best. This helps take the focus off of the dress, and brings the attention back to you. This is why I love when a bride decides to go with a white dress because let’s be honest, it truly is all about you! I also like the lighter pink, and blue color palettes as well.
3. What to wear for him?
Let’s be honest, once you pick out what you are going to wear for your engagement session, the real trick is figuring it out for your man. Thankfully, they can be extremely easy to please. Once you get your color palette chosen, go off of it for him too. If you went the light blue or even light pink route, have him choose navy dress slacks, maybe even a light colored button down and throw that jacket in too. Why not right? He doesn’t have to wear it the whole session. But let’s have some fun and make him look GQ! Then let’s bring a pair of jeans and a nice button down shirt as well because we know the guys like to also have that casual look too.
4. How many outfits do I choose?
Typically I say let’s choose two different outfits, sometimes maybe even three. I will always tell you to dress it up! This is the one time, besides your wedding day, where you can go all out and dress it up and have some fun! Wear that long flowy dress that you have always dreamed of capturing yourself in. And then bring another simple maybe a more casual look for both of you to also have as well. This gives you a couple different choices to use for your save the dates, but also to hang up on you wedding day, your bridal shower, and even your bachelorette party!
